Early BBC Nicam Stereo Test
The Nicam
system was developed in Britain by the BBC and, for a long time,
programmes were transmitted with stereo soundtracks from the Crystal Palace
transmitter.
The programmes were never announced as having stereo soundtracks.
This page contains what, I believe to be, an early test, to see what effect
adding a Nicam sub-carrier would have on normal FM television sound.
The tests were radiated during daylight hours on BBC Two from Crystal Palace.
The Test Card F shown below was displayed before the tests began, and note,
there was no channel identification nor colour bars over the top castellations.
The soundtrack of the tests consisted of passages from
"The Stagecoach" by Washington Irving,
read by, Richard Baker, repeated several times,
along with each pattern shown below.
The recording from which these stills and soundtrack were taken,
was recorded sometime between 1981 and 1985.
