BBC Radio London
BBC Radio
London opened on the 6th of October 1970
from studios in Hanover Square, nr Oxford Circus,
initially on VHF only, from Wrotham,
in mono on 95.3Mhz.
The pre-launch trade tests were the output of Radio One, plus announcements.
Below are some of the trade tests
does anyone have the opening in 1970 on tape?

The frequency was later changed to 94.9Mhz, due to IBA
tests for Capital Radio on 95.8Mhz.
Transmissions
on MW were added in 1973 on 1458Khz / 206m from Brookmans
Park.
Stereo transmissions began in 1981.
The new schedule described in "Start Of Stereo" was, I think, very
good.
Listen out for John Waite of Radio Four's "You And Yours" and "Face
The Facts"
back in his days on local radio.
The Radio London News jingle in "Start Of Stereo" was the best they
ever had, I think.
The first programme actually broadcast in stereo was "Music on the Move"
several days prior to 11th February.
.
"Music on the Move" was a continuous music programme so
there was no presenter to comment on it being in stereo, and if anything went
wrong,
the
programme could be quickly transferred to another studio.
John Allen operated/produced the programme from cubicle 1B.
The
VHF transmitter was moved to Crystal Palace about
a year later, because
coverage was found to be very poor in Central/West London from Wrotham.
Radio London closed at 7pm on Friday 7th October 1988.
It was replaced by Greater London Radio.
