BBC Radio One Starts On VHF
Radio
One started transmissions on it's own VHF network in 1988.
Prior to this, there was a single transmitter serving London, located at Crystal
Palace
More details on this can be found here
On launch day, the various transmitters around the U.K were switched on in
stages,
starting in Scotland and finishing, I think, at Wenvoe.
The switch-ons were done with the help of 'Bros'.
The Medium Wave network was closed shortly after the VHF launch,
and
the frequencies were re-used for Britain's first national speech commercial
station,
Talk Radio.
