London Broadcasting (LBC)
London
Broadcasting (LBC) opened on the 8th of October 1973 at 6am
from studios in Gough Square, just off Fleet Street,
and was the first licenced commercial radio station on the UK mainland,
transmissions were from a temporary transmitter at Lots
Road
on 417m / 719Khz
Medium Wave
and Croydon on 97.3Mhz
VHF.
The Medium Wave frequency later changed to 261m / 1152Khz
when the Saffron Green transmitter site opened.
The format of the station was News and Information.
The late night "Nightline" 'phone-in programme soon built up a keen
following.
LBC went on to supply the News for all the ILR stations as they opened around
the country.
The station had its ups and downs and eventually lost its franchise in 1994.
