National Digital Radio (DAB)

Do you remember
the music that accompanied |
Digital
Radio formally known as DAB is not really vintage,
but the recordings on this page do represent some of the early stages
in the development of the system.
The BBC launched Digital Radio in 1995 but it wasn't until late 1998 - early
1999
that receivers started to appear in the shops.
At that time, the BBC multiplex carried
Radios' One, Two, Three, Four, Five Live, Five
Live Sports Plus,
World Service,
BBC
Parliament and
BBC Extra,
which
was simply a one hour documentary / demonstration of digital radio,
endlessly repeated.
The national commercial multiplex operated by Digital One started in November
1999.
One of the stations they offer is Oneword, a speech based service.
BBC
RADIO 4 Feedback 11/01/02
On
the 21st of December 2001 controversial changes were made to the BBC multiplex,
bit rates were reduced and Radio 4 was broadcast in mono from 20:00 to 09:00.
This brought many complaints and Feedback interviewed Jenny Abransky.
BBC Extra
Part One - Part Two
- Part Three - Part Four
Please
Note: This programme had a very wide dynamic range
It's a shame that this was only transmitted in mono,
as
it is quite a well thought-out programme.
BBC
Parliament
This was sometimes transmitted after coverage ended
BBC
Five Live Sports Plus
Transmitted when there was no extra sports coverage scheduled
